Why did I start feeding my dog Nom Nom Dog Food (a veterinarian’s perspective)?

I started feeding my shepherd, Griffin, fresh dog food two years ago out of frustration.

My husband and I had just returned from a trip, and while we were away, our pet sitter had spent much time enticing him to eat his dry food.

However, Griffin had put his paw down and was being very picky. As a veterinarian, I have access to countless diets.

Many popular commercial dog foods (kibble and wet dog food) are backed by years of science. However, when you receive multiple text messages from your pet sitter that your dog refuses to eat while you drink margaritas in Mexico, you know it is time for a change.

Neither you nor your dog is enjoying your vacation.

Griffin is also one of those dogs who will refuse to eat and then vomit yellow bile. The idea that “if he is hungry, he will eat” is not true for all dogs.

I know this from years of seeing patients and my personal dog.

One of my clients was feeding Nom Nom dog food, so I had already researched it. It is one of the original fresh food diets for dogs.

I ordered the first box, and he loved it.

What I like about Nom Noms

Ingredients

  • NomNom’s recipes are made with fresh ingredients and free from preservatives.
  • The ingredients are locally sourced and made in small batches.
  • This means that the food is always fresh and reduces the chances of any one ingredient being contaminated (which is always a risk with mass-produced pet foods).

Food Allergies

  • There’s a variety of recipes.
  • If your dog has a food sensitivity, these are single protein recipes. Many dogs are allergic to the protein source in their food.
  • For instance, if your dog has a beef allergy, you can try the Turkey fare instead

Convenience

  • The food is delivered right to my door, so I don’t have to worry about going to the store or running out of food.
  • Especially great during the height of the supply chain issues. NomNom always had food, and the deliveries are always on time.

Flexibility

  • NomNoms website makes it easy to change the dog food delivery if I go out of town and change the delivery date.
  • The meal packs are perfect for 1-2 servings, making meal time easier. This is especially true if we are traveling. I know how many meals to bring with us.
  • You can still mix this with your dog’s diet so they are eating kibble and a fresh diet.
  • You’re not locked into your plan if your dog’s needs change over time.
    • If they start getting a little chubbier or develop a food allergy, you can easily adjust their plan accordingly.

What are the benefits of NomNom’s Dog Food?

Specific to Your Pet

  • When you sign up for the service, you’ll complete a detailed questionnaire about your dog including:
    • Weight
    • Activity Level
    • Coat Type
    • Dietary Restrictions
      • NomNomNow will then create a custom meal plan for your pup that includes three fresh meals daily.

      Scientific Formulations

      • All recipes are created by board-certified veterinary nutritionists so that you can feel better about the ingredients in the food.

      Easy to Use

      • The food arrives frozen in individual portion-sized bags, so all you have to do is thaw and serve.
      • I take out 3-4 packages at a time and put them in the fridge so they can thaw
      • It’s great for pet parents who travel, so our pet sitter has to open a bag and serve. She even commented that feeding our dog is much easier when she stays with him.

What are the cons of NomNom’s Fresh Food for Dogs?

While it is an excellent option for pet parents seeking fresh dog food, a few downsides are worth mentioning.

      Cost

      • It’s one of the more expensive pet food delivery services on the market.
        • A week’s worth of food for our 80-pound dog cost us just over $75 (shipping was free).
        • Given how often our dog eats (three times per day), that works out to approximately $3 per meal – which isn’t outrageous, but it is more than we usually spend on his food.
      •  NomNomNow only ships within the continental U.S.
        • It isn’t an option for pet owners who live outside the US
      • Space
      • This food can take up a lot of freezer space
        • You can order a full order or half order. I ordered the full order, but you can get a decreased amount.
        • If you go for the full order, you will want to ensure you have plenty of freezer space. You can see from the image below the full order takes up almost the entire freezer when it first arrives.

How do I switch my dog to NomNom Dog Food?

If you would like to switch your dog to Dog Food, you can do so gradually over two weeks.

      1. Mix 25% of Nom Nom Dog Food with 75% of their current food for 3-4 days.
      2. Then mix a 50:50 ratio of NomNom Dog Food and their current diet for 3-4 days.
      3. Then, mix 75% of NomNom dog food with 25% of their existing food for an additional 3-4 days.
      4. Then, you can feed them the Nom Nom Dog food exclusively. If you notice any vomiting, diarrhea, or decreased appetite, return to the previous ratio for a few days.

      Pro Tip

Make sure to check your dogs current food to see how many calories they are currently eating per day. You want to feed your dog the same amount of calories, not the same quantity of food to avoid changes in their weight.
